We have a boiler!

Major plumbing milestone: heating and hot water have returned! There’s still a way to go- with no hot water or heating in the kitchen, there are holes in the wall, we need supply and drainage for the washing machine, but at least we’re ready to hit our usual November heating switch on!

Plumbing the depths…

I think it’s often easier to do stuff yourself than pay for it to be done. The last fortnight has been quite difficult for us, having the plumbers in: it’s a week after the expected finish date for their work, and we still have no hot water or heating (which would be off anyway, but…

Back to work

After finishing the bedroom in May, we took a bit of a break from work on the flat. It was welcome, and great to live in it and get used to having our space again, but we also didn’t have a lot of choice. The next project needed to be the big one: moving the…

Paint pots everywhere…

Quick, probably-totally-obvious-to-everyone-but-me tip for today… when you’re picking a colour, you might buy a few testers, and they might come in a miniature paint pot like this. Finishing the prep

There’s a point, and I’ve about to hit it with our bedroom, when nearly all the prep is done, and it suddenly feels like everything’s coming together. Finishes like skim plaster or lining paper definitely help get you there, but in here what’s really done it is putting the trim on.  I’ve kept it all…

Draughtproofing

Our floorboards are all tongue and groove, which is great for reducing noise and draughts.  Over the years though, boards have been lifted, which means cut or broken tongues. You can feel a bit of a breeze blowing through those gaps, and on windy winter days (plenty of those in Edinburgh!) it’s very noticeable. I…

The bedroom

I’ve been very lax about blogging this room… I’ve been working on it for a couple of months now, but a simple thing like picture uploads not working from my phone can so easily stop me from blogging at all. That’s sorted now, so here’s a catch up post. The big alcove is an odd…
